An Update

Not since July have I reached out to you and I apologize for that. Between spending time with both my kids, following the political machine on the tube, watching Wall Street collapse and trying to understand the repercussions of it, both global and personal, one might understand that Photoshop talk was furthest from my mind. We are heading into tumultuous times, where reflection, perseverance and innovation will be the order of the day for many of us. Could it all have been avoided? Who knows, but there are other forums to discuss those things.

However, at the headquarters of Rich Imaging Inc. we haven’t been sitting still. Producing images for Verizon, a beautiful men’s editorial for Details, catalog images for Neiman Marcus, a bunch of pro bono stuff for some incredibly talented friends of ours. Some editorial images for the Visionaire, the Wall Street Journal and a catalogue for Miu Miu. We are currently finalizing the new Hong Kong and Japan campaigns for Godiva. We’ve also been exploring the possibilities of adding CGI to our solution services and we’ve been experimenting with creating high dynamic range images as well.

I usually start out September with an annual trip to Las Vegas for the Photoshop World Conference and this year was no different. The artificial waves and white sands at the Mandalay Bay Resort were calling. The fact that the pools are just steps away from the convention center make it all so much more enticing. My dear friend Laurent from Paris offered to tag along. There’s no better place in the continental US for hanging with your buddies than Las Vegas. An unexpected free upgrade to the HOTEL at Mandalay Bay had us on cloud nine from the moment we arrived.

Many a photographer friend have given high praise to the Canon Powershot G9, an extremely powerful but compact camera, boosting an impressive 12.1 Megapixels and user-friendly functionality. I was lucky, apparently, to have snatched one up merely a few days before my trip to Vegas at a very cheap rate. Why lucky? Because we’ve learned that Canon has discontinued their most popular camera. Go figure?! But what better way to take the new toy for a test spin in the Nevada dessert and on the Sin City strip. At the top of the article you can see a sample shot of the Hoover Dam, click on it to get a higher resolution.

At the the time of this writing we had yet to learn that Canon has announced the launch of the PowerShot G10. Loud cursing!! Which goes to show that it’s impossible to keep up with technology, as I bang a skullsize dent into my Wacom tablet.

One major factor for attending the conference is the Photoshop World  keynote by Adobe VP Johnny L.  Getting a first glimpse into the development of Photoshop is a highly enjoyable privilege akin to catching a glimpse of your favorite team at pre-season training. So what about that new release of Photoshop CS4? CS3 was written in a bit of a rush right after the merger with Macromedia. CS4 features very few major breakthroughs, but is promised to function better and significantly faster than CS3. Non- destructive editing will be available in more ways as well and 3D compatibility and functionality has been improved. We always tend to wait until we overhaul hardware and system software before upgrading to the next Photoshop. In the mean time we will be testing a demo version of the software. Look for the report in our next newsletter.

Copyright attorney Edward C. Greenberg is one of the most renowned lawyers in the US in his field. And even though he is based in New York, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for some Q&A in the city that really doesn’t sleep. When I saw his name among the many speakers a few weeks before the conference, I decided to book my trip immediately. To ensure a fruitful encounter, I sent him an e-mail prior to the conference. He agreed to meet by the poolside to discuss some specifics. Meeting him was insightful and informative to say the least. While in search to get a few specific questions answered, I finished by learning some invaluable information in regards to the business of creating images.

In the artist spotlight section of the June newsletter I introduced you to photographer, teacher and author, Martin Evening. For years I’ve been an avid fan and advocate and I’m pleased to inform you that his successful efforts of teaching Photoshop to photographers have resulted in his induction into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.

I was fortunate enough to congratulate and have a word with him in person after the presentation. Never meet your heroes some say, but in this case that’s far from the truth.
He is a truly kind gentleman. Congratulations go out to Martin!!

Now some of you might know that 2 years ago I was the recipient of the prestigious Photoshop GURU Award for best photo montage for an image commissioned by Adidas. Over the years I‘ve had the privilege to work on some breathtaking concepts and the past year was no different. I managed to enter three awesome images of which two were nominated in the category of photo retouching. And I am pleased to inform you that I brought home the hardware once again. I wish to thank Fritz Westenberger and the whole team at Sugartown Creative Inc. for commissioning Rich Imaging to work on both images that were nominated.

And since we are on the topic of awards, I would like to give mention to an illustrator friend who has garnered numerous accolades over the years for her wonderful work. After receiving her BFA from Parsons, Charlene Potts entered the workplace, and has graced us with her collages and drawings for about 15 years. Her technique is refreshing and many of you will find comfort in her signature style which has been published in Time Out New York, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, to name a few. One of her proudest achievements is the mural project she completed for the children’s gallery in The George Washington Carver Museum in Austin Texas. She is currently launching a new venture for pet lovers of which you can get a sneak peak here.
