Spotlight on...

Hugh Bell

Over the years I’ve been the beneficiary of profound inspiration by many truly great lens men. One of those sources has been the work of my own father in law, the legendary Hugh Bell. His archive includes iconic images of the 20th Century’s jazz legends, intimate street shots from Spain during the 1950’s, decades of expressive portraiture and much more. Bell’s interest in capturing real life moments is his trademark. The combination of ambience and smooth Jazz music was his inspiration. In 1955, Edward Steichen selected “Hot Jazz” out of 2 million photographs as one of 503 images of ‘The Family of Man’ exhibition.  To this day, ‘The Family of Man’ exhibit is widely considered the most successful photography show of all time. This month we wish to highlight his work as we launch the Hugh Bell archive. Please take a moment and enjoy.
